LAY hay LIE

1. LAY (lay, laid, laid) là ngoại động từ (transitive verb) là động từ có bổ ngữ (object) trực tiếp nói rõ ra hoặc hiểu ngầm.

Ví dụ: 

+ Bolton won't win the game tonight. I would lay my bet on it.

+ Thousands of turtles gather on the beach and lay their eggs in the sand.

+ Mary laid her little child in the cradle.
+ His father's death has laid a burden on him.

2. LIE (lie*, lay, lain) là nội động từ (intransitive verb) là động từ không cần bổ ngữ (object) đi cùng.

Ví dụ:

+ My cat loves to lie on the couch.
+ The Ponagar Tower lies about 2 km to the north of the city center.

+ After the economic crisis, there have been a number of houses lying empty in that city.
+ His pen lay on the desk.

* chúng ta đừng nhầm lẩn với động từ thông thường 'lie' có nghĩa 'nói dối': He lied to me about his age (Anh ta đã nói đối với tôi về tuổi của anh ta.)
